Essex Junior Academy (EJA), a public special education school, serves classified students ages 5-15 with specific learning disabilities, emotional disabilities and multiple disabilities.

The EJA is driven by the philosophy that, given the appropriate educational environment, every child can learn according to their abilities. Our nurturing environment instills students with the behavioral skills necessary to live a responsible and productive life.

Instruction is provided in reading and language arts, mathematics, science, health and social studies. We offer a three to one student to staff ratio, and use proven models of Differentiated Instruction in tandem with New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

A school-wide Behavioral Management Program stressing healthy social behaviors and personal responsibility reinforces all academic programs. On-site speech and social work/counseling services are also provided.

In July and August, EJA provides a six-week Extended School Year that reinforces the skills students gained during the regular school year. To support instruction, fun-filled weekly field trips are incorporated into the program to increase student motivation and expose students to new experiences.
